FAQ

Join the host of Mobile Photography Weekly and the co-author of The Creative Digital Darkroom, Photoshop Masking & Compositing, and Real World Digital Photography for an inspiring and informative 1-day workshop where you'll learn how to get the most out of the photographic possibilities of the iPhone (what if I have an Android phone?). This class will focus on both photographic technique (i.e., using the iPhone as a camera and not as a camera phone), and some of that many options that are available with photo processing apps.

We’ll start off by taking a look at both the strengths and the weaknesses of the iPhone as camera. Once you know this about a particular tool, you can use it more effectively. We'll review photographic principles for getting the best images possible. Included in this discussion will be adjusting the exposure before you take the shot, using High Dynamic Range (HDR) for scenes with high contrast, using longer shutter speeds to blur motion in the scene, and working with multiple shots for collage work. We’ll also take a look at some fundamental photo apps for image processing, and developing a sound processing workflow for "app-stacking", where an image is processed in different photo apps for specific reasons.

Our explorations will cover both basic image adjustments that affect the entire photo, as well as "local" adjustments that affect only a specific area. We'll also take a look at possibilities for more interpretive approaches that can result in blending multiple images together, adding textures and graphic elements, and images that push the boundaries of the traditional photographic format.

No matter what type of photographs you make, the iPhone offers a fascinating and engaging way for you to explore another side of your photography.  This workshop will focus on taking your iPhoneography skills to the next level with an emphasis on refining both your vision and technique to create beautifully artistic images.

Participants are welcome to bring their own images on their iPhones or iPads, as well as small objects or elements they want to photograph in class for collage explorations. For specific image projects we will work on in class, the images will be supplied to you.

Some of the Key Topics to be Covered:

• Understanding the strengths and limitations of camera phones

• Developing your “Spidey Sense” for scenes that work well for iPhoneography

• Creative exposure techniques; (adjusting exposureto suit the scene, and when to use an HDR app)

• Seeing the Light: understanding light and how to work with it and around it for better photos

• Diptychs & triptychs

• Using layers and layer masks for more refined creative control

• Multiple image composites: Double exposures, simple image blends, & more intricate composites

• "Special Effects”: Textures, creative filters and moving beyond canned app effects

• Finding and developing a personal style

Requirements: Participants should bring their iPhone or iPad. The iPhone I will use to demo techniques and apps will be running the latest version of iOS 11. iOS 11 is not required for your device, but some newer apps my not work, or may not be available, if you have an older version of the iOS operating system installed on your phone. If you have any questions about this, feel free to call (530-477-8494) or send me an email. Some of the apps we will explore are free, but others are not. If you choose to purchase and download any of the apps shown in class, you can expect to pay an additional $15 to $25 on app purchases (depending on how many you get). Make sure you know your Apple I.D. password so you can purchase apps in class.

All images on this page were photographed and edited on various iPhones that I've had over the years.

Where will the class be held?
In the classroom space at the Artists' Studios in the Foothills (ASiF) in Grass Valley, California. ASiF is a fully-equippd studio art center where many artists (including me) have studio space where they make art and gallery space to display their work. It's a very visually inspring place to be in with a lot of wonderful artwork to view and appreciate.

How will the class be able to see the image editing you are doing on your iPhone?
A live view of my iPhone or iPad will be projected on a screen for everyone to to see. In addition to being able to see what I am doing in an editing app, you will also be able to see a live view for when I am using the camera app to adjust exposure.

Can I still take the class if I have an Android phone?
The class will be taught from an iOS-centric perspective and an iPhone will be used for all the live demos and instruction. Some of the apps we will work with in class are available on Android, but not all of them. All of the photography and image adjustment concepts that we will explore in this class, however, can be applied if you use an Android device.

Do apps need to be purchased before the class, or can I watch your demos to see if I am interested in them?
If you want to follow along with me in class as I am working in an app, then you would need to have it installed on your phone. But if you would rather watch as I show and discuss the different apps, and then decide later if a particular app makes sense for you, then that is fine, too.

What will it cost to purchase the apps?
That depends on how many you get. It's possible that you may already have some of the apps on your phone. Some are free, while others cost anywhere from $1 to $5. In general, you can expect to spend anywhere from $12 to $20 on app purchases.

What apps will be covered in the class?
I am always fine-tuning and updating my classes, so the apps we us in the class could change a bit by the time the class runs. Participants will be notified a week before the class as to what apps will be covered. Below is a list of some of the apps we will be exploring in the class:

Some of the apps covered in the class:
(NOTE...it's possible that we may not work with every app in this list, or that other apps will be shown that are not part of hands-on class projects)

Hipstamatic...camera & processing app (iOS only)
Diana Photos...double exposure app (iOS & Android)

Will there be a lunch break?
We will take a 60– 75 minute lunch break. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or there are places to purchase lunch a short drive from the ASiF Studios.

Can I pay on the day of the class when I arrive?
In order to ensure that we reach the minimum number of people to run the class, we strongly encourage paying for the class ahead of time. For last minute enrollments we do accept credit card payments, checks or cash (exact change please!) on the day of the class. The class size is limited to 12, so please contact me beforehand (530-477-8494) to ensure that the class is not sold out.
