FAQ

Join the host of Mobile Photography Weekly and the co-author of The Creative Digital Darkroom, Photoshop Masking & Compositing, and Real World Digital Photography for an inspiring and informative 1-day workshop where you'll learn how you can use your iPhone and/or iPad to create photo composites and collage images.

In this class we’ll be covering step-by-step workflows for combining images in a variety of apps, and you'll learn processing techniques and conceptual approaches for using your iPhone or iPad to make interesting and visually compelling images from multiple source photos.

Letters from the Lighthouse: a composite of 3 images

We’ll start with simple composites and collages that are based on blending modes, and then work up to more intricate methods that include using layers and layer masks. All work will be done on your iPhone or iPad using a variety of different apps (a list of the apps we’ll use will be sent to participants before the course begins). You can use your own images or follow along with photos that will be available for the class.

In addition to the nuts and bolts of working with apps to create composites, we’ll discuss what types of images or scenes work well for creating composites, and how to photograph with compositing in mind to create images that will work better once you begin the image blending process.

Cloud Chamber, No. 5: a composite of 4 images

Participants are welcome to bring their own images on their iOS devices, as well photograph objects or elements they want to use in a collage project. Seán will also provide a short video to watch a few weeks before the class with tips for photographing people or objects with your smartphone’s camera that make it easier to select and isolate them in a compositing project. For collage projects we will work on in class, the images will be supplied to you.

What if I have an Android Phone? The class will be taught from an iOS-centric perspective, but some of the apps we will work with are available on Android. All of the compositing concepts that we will explore in this class, both in terms of photography and collage or composite creation, can be applied if you use and Android device, but some of the apps shown in the class are only available for iOS..

Passing Thoughts on the Orbits of Heavenly Spheres: a composite of 4 images

In this workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of creating collage and composite images on mobile devices, and you’ll be able to use these skills on new paths of creative photographic discover I really enjoy making multi-image composites on my pocket-sized image studio, and I am continually amazed at some of the things I can do!

All images on this page are composites that were created on various iPhones that I've had over the yeas.

Requirements: Participants should bring their iPhone or iPad. The iPhone I will use to demo techniques and apps will be running the latest version of iOS 11. iOS 11 is not required for your device, but some newer apps my not work, or may not be available, if you have an older version of the iOS operating system installed on your phone. If you have any questions about this, feel free to call (530-477-8494) or send me an email. Some of the apps we will explore are free, but others are not. If you choose to purchase and download any of the apps shown in class, you can expect to pay an additional $12 to $20 on app purchases (depending on how many you get). Make sure you know your Apple I.D. password so you can purchase apps in class.

All images on this page were photographed and edited on various iPhones that I've had over the years.

Where will the class be held?
In the classroom space at the Artists' Studios in the Foothills (ASiF) in Grass Valley, California. ASiF is a fully-equippd studio art center where many artists (including myself) have studio space where they make art and gallery space to display their work. It's a very visually inspring place to be in with a lot of wonderful artwork to view and appreciate.

How will the class be able to see the image editing you are doing on your iPhone?
A live view of my iPhone or iPad will be projected on a screen for everyone to to see.

Can I still take the class if I have an Android phone?
The class will be taught from an iOS-centric perspective and an iPhone will be used for all the live demos and instruction. Some of the apps we will work with in class are available on Android, but not all of them, so if you choose to take the class there will be some projects you will not be able to follow along with in the same app that we will be using on the iPhone. The photography, image adjustment, and collage process concepts that we will explore in this class, however, can be applied if you use an Android device.

Do the apps need to be purchased before the class, or can I watch your demos to see if I am interested in them?
If you want to follow along with the class as we are working on a collage projct in an app, then you would need to have it installed on your phone. But if you would rather watch as I show and discuss the different apps, and then decide later if a particular app makes sense for you, then that is fine, too.

What will it cost to purchase the apps?
That depends on how many you get. It's possible that you may already have some of the apps on your phone. Some are free, while others cost anywhere from $1 to $4 each. In general, you can expect to spend anywhere from $12 to $20 on app purchases.

What apps will be covered in the class?
I am always fine-tuning and updating my classes, so the apps we us in the class could change a bit by the time the class runs. Participants will be notified a week before the class as to what apps will be covered. Below is a list of some of the apps we will be exploring in the class:
